Session Infomation

Natural hazards, such as earthquakes, volcanic eruption, landslides, tsunamis, severe weather and tornados, tropical cyclones or hurricanes, storm surges, flooding, climate change, drought, heat waves, wildfires, etc. cause severe loss to life and properties all over the globe. With more and more people move to vulnerable places, the frequency and intensity of extreme natural hazards and consequent impacts are expected to continuously increase.
Remote sensing data obtained from satellite systems with varying spectral, spatial, and temporal resolutions can provide prospects for monitoring and forecasting of natural hazards. The collection of data using earth observation (EO) systems, especially with their near real-time capabilities for tracking extreme natural events, has been valuable for alleviating the adverse impacts of natural hazards. Remote sensing systems from different platforms also serve as an important decision support tool for devising response strategies, coordinating rescue efforts, and for damage assessments.
This Session seeks original contributions in advanced applications and researches of remote sensing, geographic information system (GIS), and other geoinformation-based tools and techniques in understanding various kind of natural hazards.
